Mark Barba, MD co-authors research on impact metal wear particles have on cell-accelerated corrosion of total hip replacement implants

January 23, 2020 … The paper, titled, “Wear particles induce a new macrophage phenotype with the potential to accelerate material corrosion within total hip replacement interfaces,” reveals evidence that particles released from metal hip replacement implants through normal wear and tear can induce the body to generate new cells, or macrophages, that attack and corrode the implant, potentially leading to implant failure. The publication represents the study Dr. Barba conducted with researchers at the Department of Biomedical Science, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, and Department of Orthpaedic Surgery, Rush University Medical Center.  The research paper was published in the 4th quarter 2019 by online medical journal publisher Elsevier, Ltd.

Mark Barba, MD co-authors research selected for presentation at the 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society

November 15, 2018 – The paper, titled, “Vitamin E As a Metal Nanoparticle Scavenger: Promising Role in Neurol Cell Rescue from Cocrmo Hip Implant Wear Particles,” details the positive impact vitamin E makes in eliminating the metal ions from being released into the body. Metal ions are produced as part of the normal mechanical wear and corrosive processes occurring with metal on metal implants.

The Orthopaedic Research Society is a professional, scientific and medical organization committed to advancing orthopedic research through education, collaboration, communication, and advocacy. The annual meeting is attended by medical engineers, orthopedic surgeons, biologists, veterinarians and clinicians.  The 2019 Annual Meeting will be held February 2-5 in Austin, Texas.
