Michael S. Roh, MD
Michael Roh, MD has dedicated his career to providing superior and comprehensive patient care in the Rockford region. He co-founded Rockford Spine Center, which offered nationally-recognized comprehensive spine care for 20 years before integrating the practice into OrthoIllinois in 2023.
Following his undergraduate studies at Brown University in Maryland, Dr. Roh attended Brown University School of Medicine where he completed his studies as Valedictorian and received his medical degree. Dr. Roh continued his training through an orthopaedic surgery residency at New York Orthopaedic Hospital, Columbia University in New York. He pursued additional, specialized advanced training with a spinal surgery fellowship from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri – considered by many to be among the best training programs for spine surgery in the United States.
Today, Dr. Roh holds special expertise in cervical spine surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and the treatment of complex spine conditions. In his practice, Dr. Roh offers patients both compassion and perfectionism. He recognizes that anxiety and fear often accompany spinal disorders and he focuses on addressing the emotional as well as the physical aspects of his patients’ care. Dr. Roh maintains skills in the latest advancements and technologies in spinal care, and if surgical intervention is called for, he offers the solution that offers the highest probability of success.
Dr. Roh has served as a lecturer and trainer for orthopedic surgeons around the country on innovative disc replacement, deformity surgery, and advanced minimally-invasive techniques. He serves as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, and is a member of and committee co-chair for the Scoliosis Research Society. When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Roh enjoys skiing, golf, and tennis, but most importantly, enjoying time and making memories with his wife and three children.

Many people say surgeons just suggest surgery since that is their line of work. My experience is testimony that this is not the case with Dr. Roh. Despite a significant herniation, he factored into his consideration my current healing progress and his insight into the details of the MRI to assess that surgery is not required for me at this time. I appreciated his willingness to help me see what his trained eye saw in the MRI. He wants to ensure that the patient understands their situation clearly and in my case he certainly accomplished that. He also helped me see the path forward without surgery (Should I continue PT? Is there value in an epidural injection in my case? etc), and helped me better understand how things would go if my healing process plateaus before I'm fully satisfied with my recovery. Came highly reviewed from nurse friends and physical therapists. Took the time to answer my questions, and I had alot of them and was never condesncing or rushed. Oh my how can I tell you on how Dr Roh has made such a difference in my. life . I had a spinal fusion 6 weeks ago what a world of difference it has made . Before the surgery it had gotten so bad my walking was limited couldn’t stand for no time . Only position that was good was laying down and taking pain meds . Now no pain if so very mild I’m able to walk farther then I could. Sitting is good. I had this surgery 12 yr ago with another doctor on L1and L2 my recovery was slow was on the walker for about 4 weeks this time 3 4 and 5 I was up walk without the walker after a week doing stairs. Cooking again no pain and it didn’t hurt to stand. I feel great wish I had did it sooner. After suffering for years with lower back pain, where having three incidents where I could barely get out of bed, I would have to crawl on all fours with excruciating pain. I went through pain managemen,having injections that sometimes worked. I had nerves cauterized twice in 3 years, decompression treatments, and weekly chiropractic care, sometimes morning and evening. I was finally referred to Dr. Roh and I thank God for him and his staff. Dr. Roh is a very professional Dr. He comes across as being straight and to the point. He tells it like it is. After months of increasing leg pain and numbness, and no relief after physical therapy or chiropractic, my nurse practitioner suggested Rockford Spine Center. I saw Dr. Roh and had a minimally invasive discectomy and fusion of L4-5. Immediately after surgery the pain and numbness were gone. Immediately! I was able to go home the same day, climb stairs and sleep in my own bed. Post op discomfort was just that, discomfort and nothing compared to what I had dealt with prior to surgery. I took the prescribed pain med for 24 hours and after easily managed with acetominophen. So happy I didn't wait longer! I used to dread having to stand for more than 5 or 10 minutes or walking through a large store. Now I walk or stand as long as I want with absolutely no issue. Just a few weeks after surgery my back and leg feel absolutely normal. Dr Roh, Matt, Angie, Casey, the front desk, Xray and MRI were caring knowledgeable and professional. Dr. Roh performed two simultaneous procedures on my back nearly ten years ago - a Laminectomy and Foraminotomy. I had problems with my back stemming from years of high school and college related sports activities and training. I had re-occurring issues that progressively got worse, to the point where I sought help from Dr. Roh. I know of several people who had similar surgeries, outside of the Rockford Spine Center where the results were not as positive. However, my situation with Dr. Roh was fantastic. I walked out of the hospital the same day as the surgery - of course sore. Within one month to the day of surgery, I was swinging a golf club on the driving range. I have not had a day of back pain post recovery from the surgery. Zero! I'm an avid golfer. I lead a very active life, that includes four to five days per week in the gym lifting weights and performing cardio activities. My ability to live life the way I currently do, is a direct result of the services performed by Dr. Roh. I would highly recommend him. I'll put it this way, I'm not one to post reviews - good or bad. Dr. Michael Roh performed a Prestige® Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement (C6-C7) on me on May 27, 2020. My experiences with them — pre-op, the procedure, and post-op — could not have gone better. Everything that I needed to know was clearly explained so that I had no questions or concerns. The same is true for the surgery itself. Everyone is different, but for me, I went home afterwards and didn't feel like I had undergone a procedure in my neck. I did not need to use the prescribed pain medicine, only taking Tylenol for a couple of days. If this surgery is recommended, you do not need to be apprehensive about it. Minimally Invasive expert I required surgery on a herniated L5-S1 disc. The MRI showed a large floating fragment that caused sciatic pain through my left leg. I received a response from Dr Roh's office within 48 hours of sending my MRI results to his office and had an initial consultation within a week. He and his physician assistant explained my condition and my treatment options along with the risks very clearly. I felt that my questions were listened to and addressed fully. The Minimally Invasive technique Dr Roh used was an outpatient procedure lasting 15-20 minutes and involved a small (less than 1") incision with no cutting of musculature or tendons. I was (essentially) pain-free and feeling very good by 6:00pm the same day. The "worst" effects were actually from the anesthesia rather than the surgery. My only critique would be that I felt the pain-killers were over prescribed (10 days of one drug and 3 of a second). But pain management is in the patient's control.Patient Submitted Review

My husband , Steve , had spinal fusion surgery on May 25th , 2018. The entire experience from our first appointment to our last post surgical visit were so much above and beyond anything we have experienced-we were both extremely happy. I had lower back surgery done by Dr.Roh. I had Spondylolisthesis of L5 over SI I also had stenosis with numbness and weakness in my left leg. I have titanium hardware in my lower back... and 6 weeks, after 2 surgeries, I was walking up to 3 miles a day. I am now about 9 weeks post op. My left leg is asymptomatic. I feel great! My 12 mile ride to work ,I would pull over 3 times, get out of my vehicle walk to relief the pain, then continue, the time I reached my destination had tears in my eye from the pain. After seeing Dr. Roh & his PA Matt back in 2015 for a lower back issue (I had a microdiscectomy then), I knew where I was going to go for the neck issue I was currently having. I was having severe burning pain in my neck/shoulder/arm. I was also having tingling in my fingers and I had lost a lot of strength in my right arm. It was also causing terrible headaches. Dr. Roh and Matt were both great. I had an MRI and they discovered very quickly what was going on. They explained it very thoroughly, which is also very helpful. I first saw Dr. Roh in 2015 for back pain that I’d been experiencing for a couple of years. I’d grown tired of being told that there was nothing I could do but pain management (shots) every few weeks. I also grew pretty skeptical because the pain management doctor telling me that I couldn’t do anything else seemed a little bit like someone who just wanted me to keep coming and paying $500 a shot forever. I knew my daughter had used Dr. Roh for her back problems and they were totally solved, so when I decided to get a second opinion I immediately thought of him. I called the Center and was asked to send all the X-rays and chart information I had about what I’d already done for my back issue. I made all the calls and the information was sent. About 3 days later I got a call from Dr. Roh’s nurse saying that he thought he could help me and we made an appointment. At the appointment he was very thorough and explained what the procedure would do for me and went over any risks. The day of surgery he took about 4 hours to correct my problem and to untangle nerves that had been trapped. In fact after surgery the nerve pain from the newly untangled nerves was the worst pain of all. I was prescribed medication and that kept it under control. Six weeks later, I was walking upright and pain free. He did an excellent job of helping me regain independence from more and more drugs. A couple years later I had another back issue - this time it was an emergency situation (cauda equina) and I am so very lucky that I went to him. If I hadn’t, I’d be paralyzed and wearing diapers for incontenence for the rest of my life. I owe him EVERYTHING. This surgery was shorter, but more important than the other for sure. I was released after a day and recovered at home for about 5 weeks. I am pain free and stand straighter than ever before. He truly is a miracle worker. I first met Dr. Roh in early 2014. I had lower back pain. He ordered an MRI and it showed I had stenosis in my spine. He also noticed a golf ball size tumor on my right kidney, which was more serious than the stenosis. The tumor was Renal Cell Carcinoma, kidney cancer. A urologist in Rockford removed the kidney. Dr. Roh performed neck surgery on my neck in May of 2016. I had four vertebra fused together. Prior to the surgery. I was having tingling in my left hand, chest pains, headaches and muscle soreness in my neck. After the surgery, all of these issues went away. I bent over to pick up a hose and ruptured my disc at L4. I was in excruciating pain and unable to work (2 months). My primary care physician and hospital basically ignored me. I had neck surgery in January of 2017 that included C1 thru C7. Before I even saw Dr. Roh he had looked at my MRI and all the test that I had done. He showed great concern at the results and even ordered more test. When I did see him the staff got me in right away which he then explained to me and my wife what was going on with my spine and how he could correct the problem and scheduled surgury right away. I have had a bone spur in my neck for almost two years. I saw two different surgeons, who were highly recommended. I did not feel comfortable- for various reasons-with either working on my spine. I had gone through physical therapy, epidural shots, different prescriptions to ease the pain. All to no avail. Then I was recommended to Dr. Roh. I would definitely recommend Dr. Roh to family and friends. Before I saw him I could barely walk and I was in constant pain. He saw me and after taking x-rays and examining me, he knew exactly what the problem was and how to treat it. I chose to have a lumbar fusion which was a more permanent solution. I had dealt with sciatic pain in buttocks, and down leg, and even numb toes. I said I would never have back surgery...ever. I went to Dr Roh, he explained that if left untreated this would progress, and eventually I would drag my foot. I had the surgery. Had none of the sciatic pain right out of surgery, and now 6 weeks later....still have none. I can not thank Dr. Roh enough. He and his staff are AMAZING. This Dr. Knows what he is doing. I hade a total disk replacement in my neck Dec 23rd 2015. I fought the thought of having surgery, but the nerve pain (herniation in my C4 & C5) I was enduring down my right arm was too great to dismiss. The procedure went very well, the recovery time was EXACTLY the way Dr. Roh explained to me. VERY QUICK and it really only felt like a sore throat for about a week. I have NO restrictions! Dr. Roh is excellent. I was struggling for over a year with increasing weakness, numbness and balance problems, originally diagnosed by a neurologist as CIDP. A neck MRI was ordered by a second neurologist and results were sent to Dr. Roh. I had a bulging disc 3-4 and stenosis. If he had not operated I would have been in a wheelchair for life within 6 months. It's two months later and I feel great after a year and a half of really struggling. Dr Roh was the only doctor (after dealing with back pain for 20 years and many doctors not figuring out my pain) was able not only tell me what was wrong, but showed me what was going on. Dr Roh told me the only fix for this was lower lumbar fusion. He fused 3 stress fractured vertebrae and my back pain was gone in a day. He and his staff are excellent. my 1st impression was of the office and office staff, the office décor is very relaxing yet professional, not the "usual" sterile feeling of many Doctor offices. The staff is extremely friendly, yet professional, and one time my wait was 6 minutes and the staff came out, apologized for the wait, and explained I was next to see the Dr. I was called back within 3 minutes. That impressed me, as I have never had a Dr office do that! I first met Dr Roh's P.A, Matthew, . Very courteous and helpful, explaining everything in terms I can understand. Then Dr Roh walks in, offers his hand in a hand shake, and greeted me with a smile. He got down to why I was there, did x-rays and an MRI, got the results then offered the diagnosis and options. We discussed the options and decided on surgery.. I had a cervical spinal fusion and now have a titanium plate and screws in my neck, and feel great! After 2 years of leg pain, 6 steroid injections and Meds. A blessing came my way when a physical therpist told my husband " Dr. Roh was rated in the top 10 % of the best Spine Surgeons in the country." And he was right here in RKFD. I had nothing to lose. I made my appointment, ( it took 5 weeks to get in ) #worth it !! He was awesome, He knew i neeeded help and suggested a spinal fusion @ L-4-L5 & S-1 . And Yes i was scared !! I did not want to do this major surgery , but after 2 years of pain I knew it was what was best for me. At 52- My quality of life -means the world to me , I needed to get back to pain free. I needed to be Gardening again , walking 2 miles, sitting in a car -for a road trip with out the agony of leg and hip pain. Now, after 6 weeks I'm doing so much better !! The leg and hip pain gone !!! I'm back to work !! I'm walking!! doing *** Very little gardening , but I'll get there. Over all, I'm so happy , I will tell everyone about him and how he helped me beat this !! :) On the negative side. All I can say is the pain meds after sugery were so strong . When the Epidural injections failed to help my neck pain, my pain clinic doctor told me that I needed to see a Spine Surgeon. This was not what I wanted to hear, but I knew it was what I needed to do. Dr Michael Roh came highly recommended. He had performed surgery on my dad, my close friend, and one of my neighbors. From the first moment that my husband and I met with Dr Roh, we felt very comfortable. He explained everything in detail and took the time to answer all of our questions. It took just one visit to know that he was the Doctor that we wanted to perform my surgery. I suffered from terrible nerve pain following a laminectomy done by another physician about 13 years ago. My experience was so terrible I didn't want to consider surgery again. I struggled with narcotics, pain pumps and injections to help me cope with the pain. I finally got to the point where nothing was working so my daughter recommended that I try Dr. Roh. Everyone in Dr. Roh's office from Dr. Walker, Justine his nurse, Matt Schwabero, PA and Dr. Roh was respectful to me and helped me understand my options. I underwent a spinal fusion.
