Brian Foster, MD
My interest in medicine began at an early age when my dad, as a busy general surgeon, often took me to work with him while making his rounds on the weekend and on call overnight. I loved everything about the hospital: from the hustle and bustle of a level one trauma center, to how my dad put people at ease with his unparalleled bedside manner. Just as influential was what I saw outside of the hospital: appreciative patients thanking my dad for helping them through times when they were sick or injured and most vulnerable. Even as a child, I knew I wanted to make this same difference in peoples’ lives.
I focused my educational career around medicine and even spent time as a nursing assistant in the intensive care unit during college, where I gained valuable insight into the team effort required for patient care.
After completing my medical degree I was exposed to many areas of orthopedic surgery during my residency. While treating an abundance of hand injuries in both the emergency and operating room I began to realize that though they are just a small part of the body, hands effect daily function in a significant way. Consequently, repair of hand injuries and deformities can dramatically improve a patient’s life.
My decision to pursue hand surgery as a career was further strengthened by a medical mission trip to Vietnam. We operated on children with a variety of hand problems, from syndactyly in Apert Syndrome to ulnar nerve deficiency resulting from trauma. By restoring form and function to these children’s hands, we added a new dimension to their lives.
My approach to patient care revolves around communication. As a hand and upper extremity surgeon, my job is to evaluate and treat disorders including, but not limited to, traumatic, degenerative, congenital, and rheumatologic problems. A vital part of my job however, is to educate patients and their families of their diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes. To do this well, I must learn what makes a patient unique.

I made an appointment with Doc Foster as a second opinion for an arthritic thump. There is no comparison between the previous doc at IB&J and Doc Foster. Doc Foster was extremely through compare to the IB&J doc. He reviewed my issues and presented me with three viable options including a cortisone shot, which I agreed to. Dr Foster is a very kind, intelligent, and absolutely phenomenal surgeon. I had to have my own nerve redone and he did it both times. Of course it was my body producing a ton of scar tissue that trapped my nerve again, I also have multiple medical problems including taking chemo therapy and small doses. He works with my ra doctor and he also explains everything with a smile. I got a second opinion just because it was in my best interest. And I decided to go back to the doctor Foster because he is a very talented kind and considerate position and surgeon. Wow, just wow. The entire experience from scheduling to appt has been so smooth. We were greeted by a kind and helpful staff. There was no wait time, as the staff greeted us in the waiting area. Once we got into the evaluation room, the nurse took time to document everything we had to share and also asked more probing questions to be sure the doctor had the full picture of the problem. There were X-rays taken and Dr Foster came right in a did a multitude of function testing on my aunt’s hands, went over the X-rays and his thoughts on a plan of action. He also assured us that, although he is a hand/wrist specialist, there is an entire team who specialize in upper arm and shoulders so no matter the cause of the problem, I feel confident that we are going to get to the bottom of the problem. Excellent bedside manner! Incredible surgical skills, I had a radial distal fracture on left wrist. A very complex break. Without surgery I would have had some deformity and very limited function of left hand. I remember the surgery nurse saying what I had was fairly major. Dr. Foster did open surgery and installed hardware that gave the bone a scaffold to grow on and rejoin. 6 months later you can barely see the scar, bone has completely regrown, and I have full function of the hand and wrist with no deformity, my hand looks like nothing ever happened! Dr. Brian Foster is The Best Doctor for repairing any problem with your fingers up to and including your elbow. I say that because I rolled my car in 2018. I had broken several bones, my left elbow, and my left hand/fingers. Dr. Brian Foster fixed it all! He did his surgical magic and within 2 months, I had total control and movement in my arm and fingers. He did have to do a second operation on my elbow because my elbow bone had grown and had to be removed just so I could bend my elbow again. Once that was done, I was good as new! Well, after rehab. I saw Dr. Brian Foster for a check up yesterday and he was quite impressed with how much more movement I now have with my arm and fingers! It has been 4 years since Dr. Foster did his magic and I have recommended Dr. Brian Foster to 2 different people with broken bones and he has fixed their issues too! Dr. Foster and his staff were/are AMAZING! They took such care and the best option of my Surgery of a broken wrist. He even went above and beyond doing a Carpal Tunnel Release, as that would eventually need to be done with the type of break I had would have damaged this tendon. I am the Bionic Women now, as I also needed metal plate with screws. After only 12 weeks I am able to do most everything.
