David Thom, DPM
Growing up, I was fortunate to have a best friend whose father was an emergency medicine physician. It was this influence that first peaked my interest in pursuing a career in health care. They both served as mentors to me throughout my higher and medical education, beginning as I pursued pre-medicine degrees at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University in Michigan, continuing through my medical training.
During my sophomore year I experienced the second influence that helped chart the course of my medical career. I had the opportunity to shadow a fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon who introduced me to the field of podiatry. Prior to this opportunity, I had never been exposed to or was aware of the field of podiatry. But through this surgeon I was able to meet a number of podiatrists and found I was intrigued with the specialty. I found the balance between clinical, non-operative care and surgical corrective care very appealing.
Following the attainment of my bachelor degree in biomedical sciences, I enrolled in the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. I graduated 3rd in my class of 84 and moved straight into my residency training at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where I had the opportunity to assist OrthoIllinois podiatrists Dr. William Bush and Dr. Giovanni Incandela while advancing my clinical and surgical skills.
Today, I am proud to now also be a part of OrthoIllinois. In my practice I provide both conservative and surgical treatment for a wide variety of foot and ankle conditions and injuries. I have a special interest in the treatment of foot structural deformities, such as bunions, hammertoes, osteoarthritis, metatarsalgia, low arches, and high arches. I also specialize in soft tissue-based pathology of the foot and ankle such as tendon ruptures/injuries, ligament injuries, and plantar fasciitis.
In providing patient care, I believe establishing strong communication with my patients is key, especially when discussing surgical treatment. I believe my job is not only to provide my patients with the highest level of care available, but for them to leave each visit with a strong understanding of the pathology of their condition and their treatment options.
In my free time I enjoy DIY/renovation projects, working with tools, and anything technology-based, including building my own computers. I also enjoy the outdoor activities of winter snowboarding and summer golfing.
Thank you for this opportunity to provide your podiatric care. I look forward to helping you return to a more active and pain-free lifestyle!
